CHICAGO – The Exelon Foundation has invested in Continuum Industries and added the company to its Climate Change Investment Initiative (2c2i) portfolio, continuing its support for innovative companies developing practical solutions that can help strengthen reliability, keep bills as low as possible and prepare the energy grid for growing demand.
As electricity demand continues to grow, utilities face increasing pressure to expand and modernize energy infrastructure while maintaining affordability and reliability for families and businesses. Continuum Industries is helping address that challenge through Optioneer, an artificial intelligence-powered platform that enables utilities and developers to evaluate, compare and advance transmission and infrastructure projects more efficiently, with the goal of reducing planning risk and supporting better customer outcomes.
Now in its seventh year, 2c2i continues to invest in early-stage companies building practical climate and energy solutions with strong commercial potential and meaningful community impact. The program focuses on companies whose work can benefit one or more of Exelon's major markets, including Atlantic City, Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., through solutions that:
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Boost the resiliency of urban infrastructure, including the power grid, transportation systems, buildings and vacant land
Help communities adapt to climate change
Advance local sustainability goals
"As energy demand grows, building the infrastructure needed to serve customers responsibly, reliably and affordably becomes even more important," said Faith Davis, Lead 2c2i. "Continuum Industries is developing technology that can help utilities and developers make better decisions earlier in the planning process, which has the potential to improve project outcomes, reduce risk and support the long-term grid investments customers and communities depend on. That focus is aligned with the Exelon Promise — our commitment to support customers today while advancing solutions that keep bills as low as possible over time."
Continuum Industries: Accelerating Infrastructure Planning
Founded in 2018, Continuum Industries develops technology designed to help utilities and infrastructure developers identify, evaluate and compare potential routes and upgrade alternatives for network capacity expansion plans and projects.
Its flagship platform, Optioneer, uses AI and large datasets to generate and assess potential infrastructure routes while accounting for engineering, environmental, land-use and community considerations. The technology reduces the time required to evaluate early-stage project alternatives from weeks to hours, helping organizations move more efficiently from planning toward execution.
The platform has been deployed to screen over 420,000 miles of infrastructure alternatives across North America, Europe and other global markets. It is used by system planners at ISOs and utilities to identify which solutions can be permitted and built within set budgets and against strict timelines. Environmental, land and engineering professionals use it to increase efficiency by an order of magnitude while developing lower impact projects. By bringing more information and analysis into day one of project development, Continuum Industries aims to reduce project risk, improve stakeholder engagement and help support disciplined grid investments that strengthen reliability and help control long-term costs. As projects evolve throughout development, Continuum Industries ensures that the impacts on the public and the environment are considered at every iteration.
"As demand for electricity continues to rise, utilities and developers need a repeatable and consistent approach to planning and delivering infrastructure predictably and efficiently," said Continuum Industries Chief Executive Officer Grzegorz Marecki. "We're excited to work with the Exelon Foundation and 2c2i as we continue to expand the impact of our platform and support the energy transition and load growth."
Investing in Energy Innovation
The Exelon Foundation remains committed to supporting innovative startups through its $20 million commitment to climate-focused investment and entrepreneurship. Through 2c2i, Exelon continues to support companies developing solutions that deliver environmental, economic and community benefits — including technologies that can help communities strengthen reliability, manage growth and keep energy costs as low as possible over time.
The Exelon Foundation is currently accepting applications for the next 2c2i investment cohort through September 27, 2026. Startups developing innovative climate, clean energy and grid modernization solutions are encouraged to apply.
