Top 5 Reasons to Attend Exelon’s STEM Academies
Exelon is proud to empower the next generation of energy leaders with the Exelon Foundation STEM Academy, as well as the Boys to STEM Academy for high school juniors and seniors. Enrolling in STEM programs as a high schooler has many benefits, but we’ve compiled the top 5 reasons why you should consider joining the Exelon Foundation’s STEM programs during the summer.
Gain Hands-on Experience
The Exelon Foundation STEM Academies offer free, hands-on experience in STEM, energy and sustainability that goes beyond the classroom. Students are immersed in STEM experiences for a week, including field trips to Exelon energy facilities, real-world experiments, and career workshops, led by professionals in the field.
Improve Your Collaboration and Communication Skills
Students have an opportunity to network and collaborate with others in their peer groups, allowing them to workshop communication, cooperation and leadership skills, which are essential for any career path.
Career and College Readiness
At Exelon, we know there are people in our communities with tremendous potential who often don’t have advancement opportunities due to economic and financial barriers. That’s why the Chris Crane Memorial Scholarship was launched, providing STEM Academy alumnae the chance to apply for a 4-year full ride scholarship for those pursuing degrees in engineering, business/finance and information technology. We also provide mentorship placement and summer internship opportunities for our STEM Academy Scholars at Exelon or one of its local energy companies.
Job Growth in STEM Field
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 2023 to 2033, there will be a projected 10% increase in employment in STEM occupations due to the increasing reliance on technology. That outpaces the job growth rates projected by all other occupations. Gaining early experiences in STEM can open the door to a career in a growing field.
Build Your Network
To date, 1,240 students have attended the STEM Academy and 60 have attended the Boys to STEM Academy. Across Exelon, more than 400 employees have participated throughout the years in networking opportunities or as coaches/judges. Attendees can learn and gain mentorship from those in the field while being in an environment with like-minded students.
The Academies continue to serve as a gateway for a wide array of STEM and energy career paths that Exelon offers, ranging from cutting edge engineering roles to cybersecurity opportunities and beyond.
