The Rising Cost of Power and What We’re Doing to Help

By: Jeanne Jones, Executive Vice President and Chief Finanicial Officer
When most people sit down to open their energy bill, they’re not thinking about data centers or international trade policy. They’re thinking about the very real, immediate impact on their household budgets.
As CFO of Exelon, I’m thinking about both.
Right now, the cost of supplying electricity is rising in many parts of the country, including the regions we serve in the Mid-Atlantic and Chicagoland. This is being driven by a combination of factors – but perhaps the biggest driver is the growing demand for electricity. As everything from artificial intelligence to domestic manufacturing and electric vehicles surges, the power needed to keep those systems running is growing dramatically. Unfortunately, new sources of power – particularly clean energy such as wind and solar – aren’t being built fast enough to keep pace, in part due to outdated policies and slow permitting processes.
What does this mean for families? It means energy supply prices are going up. Exelon and our utilities never profit from higher energy supply prices because we don’t generate power; we deliver it. And while we can’t control energy supply prices, we are doing everything we can to ensure the right policies are in place to manage them. Exelon has been leading calls for policy changes at FERC and PJM, as well as partnering with our states to develop new and complementary solutions that ensure rising energy demand needs are met through new generation.
But we know our customers need help now. That’s why we created the $50 million Exelon Customer Relief Fund – a one-time assistance program to help customers who are struggling with higher-than-expected summer energy bills. This is about meeting the moment, not just reacting to it. And it builds on a long-standing commitment to and broader strategies around affordability.
Exelon customers already benefit from rates that are 21% below the average of the largest U.S. cities. Through sustained investment in our local energy grids, we’ve also improved reliability by 35% across our footprint. But affordability isn’t just about the rates we charge. It’s about what we’re doing to ensure customers have access to energy-saving programs, tools, and information that help them manage their energy use and take control of their bills.
Through our local utilities, we offer:
- Rebates for energy-efficient appliances
- Discounts on smart thermostats
- Home energy audits
- Income-eligible weatherization and energy assistance programs
- Demand response incentives that reward reduced usage during peak periods
At Exelon, affordability is both a business imperative and a community responsibility. That’s why we’re helping customers now through the Customer Relief Fund and why we’re investing in a cleaner, more reliable, and more efficient grid for the future.
Because even as energy systems become more complex, our mission remains simple: safe, affordable and reliable service for every customer in every region we serve.
