Powering Maryland’s Future: Exelon, BGE, and the Maryland Innovation Lab Team Up for Affordable Energy Solutions
At Exelon, innovation is the engine driving a more affordable, resilient, and sustainable energy future for Maryland – and across all of the states we serve. That’s why we’re thrilled to share our collaboration with the Maryland Innovation Lab (MIL) and the Maryland Department of Commerce. The effort is designed to boost regional innovation and deliver real solutions to the affordability challenges facing Maryland residents.
What Is the Maryland Innovation Lab?
Launched in 2023, the Maryland Innovation Lab is a dynamic hub that brings together startups, utilities, government, and community partners to accelerate the development and deployment of cutting-edge energy solutions. The Lab’s mission is simple but ambitious: to generate innovation that makes energy cleaner, more affordable, and more accessible for everyone.
The Maryland Innovation Lab’s 2025 decarbonization and affordability lab partners included Pompeian, Capital Logistics and Exelon operating company, BGE. The Lab has opened with startup scouting, conducted a Pitch Day and will even conclude in December 2025 with a Demo Day that can demonstrate the value of the startup collaborations.
How Exelon and BGE are Deepening Local Impact
This year BGE, an Exelon operating company, joined as a Maryland-based sponsor of the Innovation Lab, amplifying our commitment to local communities and the state’s clean energy transition.
Together with Exelon, we’re helping to identify, support, and scale some of the most promising startups and technologies that can make a real difference for our customers that depend on us.
The 2025 Cohort: Decarbonization Meets Affordability
The latest 2025 cohort is laser-focused on some of the biggest challenges in energy today: decarbonization and affordability. After a rigorous selection process, that included a Pitch Day at the Maryland Innovation Center in Baltimore, six standout startups were chosen from 25 applicants.
These innovators are now working hand-in-hand with Exelon, BGE, and other partners to pilot their efforts in order to drive solutions that can bring them to Maryland homes, businesses and beyond.
The Innovator in Focus: Maiven
Maiven is an AI-powered virtual energy assistant platform that’s transforming how utilities engage with customers. By simplifying the process of discovering, understanding, and enrolling in energy upgrades and incentives, Maiven helps more Marylanders participate in energy-saving programs. Their Energy Virtual Assistant (EVA) even speaks in customers’ preferred languages, making energy bills and programs easier to navigate for everyone.
Already, Exelon is working on a Demo Day with Maiven Energy this December in an effort with BGE Innovation and BGE Customer Strategy and Solutions teams. The effort is putting forward a 10-week solution validation “pilot program” that aims to show how the innovations can be a model for future partnerships that deliver solutions for customers.

Strategic Regional Innovation: More Than Just Technology
Our work with the Maryland Innovation Lab is about more than just cutting-edge gadgets – it’s about building a strategic regional innovation ecosystem. Exelon and our operating companies have mapped over 100 regional innovation incubators and tech accelerators, connecting startups with the resources they need to succeed. We’re working closely with our Innovation teams to support community-based incubators and multi-sector hubs to ensure that innovation is accessible and impactful across both Maryland and all of the states we serve.
The goal is to deliver cutting-edge solutions that empower customers to participate in an accessible and affordable energy transition. Whether it’s AI-powered assistants, digital engagement platforms, or equity-driven software, these innovations are designed to improve customer understanding, engagement, and access to energy upgrades and incentives.
Why Innovation and Partnerships Matter
Energy affordability isn’t just an industry challenge – it’s a priority for the customers and communities we serve. By investing in regional innovation and supporting visionary startups, Exelon and BGE are helping Maryland residents save money and build a more resilient energy future.
