Building a Resilient Energy Future: Exelon and NextEra Energy Transmission Join Forces on Key Transmission Project
Exelon and NextEra Energy Transmission are working to deliver a critical energy infrastructure project that will strengthen the power grid and drive economic growth across their regions.
We are proud to share that the regional grid operator, PJM Interconnection, has recommended our project as part of its 2025 Regional Transmission Expansion Plan. This important project offers an approximately 220-mile, 765-kilovolt (kV) high-voltage transmission line designed to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable energy for families and communities throughout Pennsylvania and parts of West Virginia. The new line will connect to substations that deliver electricity to residents and businesses across the region.
Exelon President and CEO Calvin Butler said, “Our collaboration marks a pivotal moment for our region’s energy future. At Exelon, we’re proud to join forces with NextEra Energy Transmission to deliver a project that will ensure reliable, affordable power for families and businesses across Pennsylvania and West Virginia, strengthen our grid and drive forward economic growth. We stand committed to working hand-in-hand with local communities, ensuring we provide our customers the energy they need and deserve.”
This project represents a significant technological upgrade for our infrastructure. The 765-kV lines are designed to transfer two to three times more power than 500-kV lines, while simultaneously reducing transmission losses by 50%. This increased efficiency translates directly into improved resilience during peak demand, which helps lower electricity costs. The high-voltage design has a smaller environmental footprint, as fewer towers are required compared with equivalent lower-voltage transmission structures.
The new bi-directional 765-kV superhighway will facilitate approximately seven gigawatts (GW) of power capacity. This enormous capability is a decisive competitive advantage for attracting industrial investments and major employers, creating thousands of permanent jobs. Specifically, the transmission line supports Pennsylvania’s $92 billion investment in new power generation and West Virginia Governor Morrisey’s 50 GW by 2050 plan for energy investment and workforce development.
The PJM Board’s final vote to approve the project is anticipated in early 2026.
Exelon remains committed to modernizing the grid and ensuring our customers have the energy they need to thrive – and this project offers another opportunity to do just that.
