ZION GENERATING STATION
Zion Station, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan in the Northeast Illinois community of Zion, is a former nuclear generating facility that has been converted into a voltage-stabilizing facility. After over 20 years of operation, Zion's two reactors were permanently shut down on Jan. 15, 1998.
In the early spring of 1998, both units' generators were converted to synchronous condensers. The synchronous condensers are used year round to provide stability to the Northeast Illinois power lines and have proven invaluable to electrical distribution during the peak usage months of summer. In addition to maintaining the synchronous condensers, the station's employees are also monitoring the safe storage of spent fuel.
