Three Mile Island Unit - 1

Three Mile Island Generating Station is located in Central Pennsylvania, about 12 miles south of Harrisburg, in Londonderry Township.  The station is built on an Island in the Susquehanna River.   Three Mile Island Unit 1 began commercial operations on September 2, 1974.  The initial construction cost for the plant was about $400 million.  First Energy Company, Akron, Ohio, owns Three Mile Island Unit 2, the plant damaged during an accident in 1979.

 

Three Mile Island is a pressurized water reactor designed by Babcock and Wilcox.  The plant is capable of generating 837 net megawatts; enough power to support the electricity needs of over three hundred thousand average American homes.

Emergency Planning:

 

Three Mile Island employs a sophisticated emergency response plan to protect public health and safety. Both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania approved the plan. The TMI Emergency Plan includes coordination with local counties, municipalities and school districts.

 

Supporting the Local Economy:

 

Three Mile Island has about 520 company employees.  The majority of Three Mile Island’s employees live in Dauphin and Lancaster Counties.  The station's annual payroll is about $50 million.  Additionally, during refuel outages, Three Mile Island employs several hundred temporary contractors, who boost the local economy during their stay. 

 

Three Mile Island pays local real estate taxes totaling about $480,000 every year and its employees pay about $1.5 million in state and local taxes.

 

Community Involvement:

 

Three Mile Island’s goal is to be a good neighbor and is very active in the local community. The station sponsor’s several community events including the Middletown Music Fest, and other community activities.  The station contributes $40,000 annually to dozens of community and charitable organizations each year.

 

Three Mile Island’s employees give generously to the community through a variety of charitable activities.  Employees donate about $120,000 annually to local United Way chapters.  The station also sponsors blood drives throughout the year, helping the Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank supply the needs of area hospitals.  The plant also runs Toy’s for Tots fund drives to support The Salvation Army.  In addition, the Three Mile Island is a member of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Middletown Economic Development Corporation.  Three Mile Island contributes $40,000 annually to the other charitable and community organizations.
