PECO Gas and Electric Infrastructure

PECO is Pennsylvania’s largest utility, operating and maintaining a network of 550 power substations, 21,000 miles of distribution and transmission lines, 27 gas gate stations and 6,000 miles of underground gas mains. The company serves approximately 1.6 million electric customers in the City of Philadelphia and its Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery County suburbs. PECO’s suburban gas business serves 474,000 natural gas customers.

PECO is dedicated to keeping the lights on and the gas flowing. Every year we invest a substantial amount of resources in maintaining and enhancing our system. In 2007, PECO  invested $254 million in system improvements across Southeastern Pennsylvania, including $62 million to upgrade and expand our suburban natural gas delivery network.  Highlights include:

  • More than two dozen major projects in Philadelphia and the suburbs 
  • Customer-targeted reliability enhancement work
  • Increased automation to reduce outage duration
  • Preventive maintenance including circuit patrols using infrared imaging and rights-of-way tree trimming
  • More lightning arrestors and animal guards to help prevent weather and animal-related outages
