We Can Help You Select A Natural Gas Contractor
PECO doesn't install natural gas appliances. However, the Electrical Association of Philadelphia (EAP) refers quality electrical or heating and air conditioning contractors tailored to your need and location. To receive three company referrals with contact information, you may visit their web site www.eap.org.
A code of excellence
EAP members subscribe to a code of excellence that assures customers of quality products and services. This is a referral program only, PECO does not warrant or guarantee these contractors in any way. We do understand that you need a quality-heating contractor who is knowledgeable, skilled and qualified to install your new gas system.
Things to look for in a quality-heating contractor:
- Complies with state and local codes and regulations.
- Carries the proper business and worker's compensation insurance.
- Is knowledgeable on a wide range of new equipment, technology and design procedures, not just a one size fits all solution.
- Has a local facility, and is willing to have you visit.
- Is prompt and courteous and provides fast, reliable service -- attempting to perform service at your convenience.
- Is neat and well groomed. Neatness should be reflected in their vehicles, offices and their personal appearance.
- Provides a detailed written proposal, clearly outlining the work to be done and the agreed upon cost, including labor and materials. Understand every word of any contract before you sign it.
- Asks about comfort problems experienced with your existing system and offers understandable solutions.
- Follows equipment manufacturers' installation instructions and the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54/ANSI Z223.1).
- Checks the existing venting system (chimney). If you are converting from an oil system to a natural gas system, have the chimney cleaned, and relined if needed. The chimney should be properly sized for the new equipment being installed.
When considering a heating contractor, you should:
- Ask for references. Find out if other customers were satisfied. Check with the local Better Business Bureau regarding any filed complaints.
- Ask the contractor if removing the oil and the oil tank is part of the installation. Some contractors do provide this service.
- Keep in mind that how a company treats you now reflects how they will treat you if there is a problem.
A quality-heating contractor:
- Listens to your problems and cares about your comfort.
- Will show how to maintain your system (for example, how to change the filter and operate the thermostat).
- Advise you about symptoms that could signal potential equipment problems.
- Inform you of future service requirements after your new equipment has been installed.
- Honors the terms of the warranty on the equipment throughout the warranty period.
- Follows up to make certain that you are satisfied.
- Does not offer price as the only consideration. There are often valid reasons for price differences, especially when installing new equipment.
