General Questions that Apply to Contractor and Builder Concerns

Who do I contact when a new electric service connection is required?
You can contact the ComEd New Busines Services team at 1-866-NEW-ELEC (1-866-639-3532) to request a new service connection and a request for new service will be initiated and a ComEd New Business Representative will be assigned to your project. 

Who do I contact when a revision to or the relocation of an existing electric service connection is required?
You can contact the ComEd New Business Services team at 1-866-NEW-ELEC (1-866-639-3532) to request a revision or relocation of service connection and a request for service relocation or revision will be initiated and a ComEd New Business Representative will be assigned to your project.

Who should be notified when an emergency occurs on the job site?
If there are any personal injuries, or if someone receives an electrical shock, always call 911 to obtain medical assistance. ComEd should also be notified via its emergency hotline at 1-800-Edison-1 (1-800-334-7661). If you accidentally damage a ComEd underground facility, Illinois law requires you to notify ComEd immediately at 1-800-334-7661 and JULIE at 1-800-892-0123. Within Chicago City limits, you must call DIGGER at 1-312-744-7000.

What is a Service and Meter Application?
This is a form to be completed by the customer or contractor prior to doing any major upgrade or changes on your electric equipment. When completed and submitted to ComEd, it initiates the process to have a representative contact you. If you have any questions concerning your application, you can always contact your New Business representative, or refer to the Service and Meter Application Guidelines 

How do I get a Service and Meter Application?
You can print an application form or call 1-866-NEW-ELEC (1-866-639-3532) to have an application mailed or faxed to you.  Or you can open the Service and Meter Application Form here, fill out your information and submit it through your e-mail to a New Business Representative. !new


Is there a charge for service or pole relocations?
Yes. The cost for this work is determined by ComEd based on each individual job. The party requesting the work is responsible for the costs associated with the relocation or the extension.

There is a municipal inspection sticker on my meter board. Why wasn't my electric meter set when the service was run?
ComEd needs to receive municipal inspection approvals directly from the inspection agency. The inspection agency needs to fax a copy of the approved inspection to 630-684-3701.

What are the minimum clearances near swimming pools?
Service conductors are not permitted over the pool or, in municipalities governed by the Chicago Electrical Code, over the area around the pool extending 10 feet from the edge of the pool. Outside of those municipalities, the vertical clearance of the service conductors over the area around the pool extending 10 feed from the edge of the pool must be 22 feet, 6 inches. Underground cables cannot be within 5 feet of the pool or under it unless it is installed in rigid metal conduit, intermediate conduit, or other improved raceway installed at a depth specified by the local municipal code. How do I obtain approval for main electrical panels rated 1,200 amps or greater?
ComEd's System Meter Department must approve the installation of main electrical panels rated 1,200 amps or greater. To obtain approval, four copies of a one-line diagram for the meter current transformer cabinet and disconnect switch sequence must be submitted to System Meter Department at 1919 Swift Drive, Oak Brook, IL 60521.
