Underground Asset Protection/Damage Prevention
ComEd is committed to preventing serious accidents and fatalities that can result when excavators, contractors and others do not use proper care to avoid contact with underground and above ground electrical facilities. Our primary concern is safety.

Call Before You Dig
Before you dig or drive equipment into the ground, by Illinois law you must call the appropriate one-call system (numbers listed below) at least 48 hours before working. The one-call center will then notify ComEd and other utilities of the project. The utilities will mark their facilities.

  • Within the Chicago city limits call: "DIGGER" (Chicago Utility Alert Network)  (312) 744-7000.
  • Outside the Chicago city limits call: "J.U.L.I.E." (Joint Utility Locating for Excavators)  1-800-892-0123 or visit their website at http://www.illinois1call.com/

Damage Prevention Specialists
ComEd is committed to preventing serious accidents and fatalities that can result when excavators, contractors and others do not use proper care to avoid contact with underground and above ground electrical facilities. Our primary concern is safety.

In a continuing effort to reduce needless injuries, power outages and damages, our Damage Prevention Specialists aggressively investigate contacts causing damage to electrical facilities. We are hard at work to change behavior and work practices of those companies.

Damage Prevention Specialists take immediate action after accidental contact is made, meeting with the management of companies to explain the consequences of continued unsafe and neglectful practices.

The Damage Prevention Specialists enforce aggressive policies involving collection for damages and initiate legal intervention to stop companies that have established patterns of irresponsible work practices.

The team works closely with Digger and JULIE (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) one-call systems, as well as the JULIE and ComEd sponsored Damage Prevention Councils, to promote safety and damage prevention.

Safe Work Practice Meetings
Our team of specialist will meet with you to provide information on how your business can work safely around power lines. This free service, which can be arranged at your business location, can help you and your workers avoid any practices that could endanger lives, cost money or impact project schedules.

To request assistance from a Damage Prevention Representative, please call 1-877-4-ComEd-1 (1-877-426-6331).

The goal is to continually reduce accidents involving electrical facilities, consequently increasing safety to work crews and the public and limiting outages that cause needless inconvenience to our customers.
