Conservation

Exelon’s grant of $1.5 million to The Field Museum’s Environmental, Culture and Conservation unit (ECCo) extends our efforts to address climate change beyond our service areas. Exelon is supporting The Field Museum’s work with local Peruvian organizations to protect the Cordillera Azul National Park. ECCo’s work translates museum science into conservation programs that will help protect the park from deforestation and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. A portion of the grant will help create a credible system for defining carbon offsets.

This is just one of the steps Exelon is taking to reduce, offset and displace 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020. Read more about Exelon 2020: A Low-Carbon Roadmap.

Lower Your Carbon Footprint: Exelon & The Field Museum's Take One Step Initiative

Take One Step

Locally, our partnership with The Field Museum will help to educate families and communities about renewable energy sources. Beginning this fall, Exelon will match museum visitors’ participation in the Take One Step program up to $200,000 over the next two years.

The Museum’s Take One Step is a voluntary program that encourages visitors to purchase credits to offset the carbon emissions generated by an average trip to The Field Museum. The $1 offset credit enters the carbon market and combats global warming through development of renewable energy technologies, restoration of degraded habitats and conservation of intact forests.

Renewable Energy Vehicle

Exelon’s matching gift also will enable the museum’s Renewable Energy Vehicle (REV) to travel to schools in various communities to teach students about renewable energy sources. The REV runs on a two-tank veggie diesel fuel system and uses vegetable oil as fuel because it is carbon neutral.  Outfitted with roof-mounted solar panels, the REV delivers educational materials about renewable energy sources to classrooms, fairs and festivals throughout the Chicago area. Learn more about The Field Museum’s REV.

ROWE-CLARK MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY

The Rowe-Clark Math & Science Academy in Humboldt Park, offers a world-class education for high school students.  The new academy will serve about 530 Chicago students, and is a campus of Noble Street Charter School, which brings a strong track record for academic success and enriched curriculum.  Support for the new academy includes $2 million from Exelon, $2 million from the Rowe Family Charitable Trust, and a $200,000 contribution from Frank and Vera Clark.

At the February 2007 announcement, Mayor Daley said of the school, "The future of our children, and of our entire city, depends on schools that are capable of producing graduates who can perform the jobs of the 21st century economy, and also exercise their civic responsibilities. I expect this school to be a great model of what we can accomplish when government partners with non-profits and civic-minded businesses like Exelon."

COOL GLOBES

CoolGlobes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet hits Chicago for its summer campaign. One hundred globes, decorated by local artists and sponsored by local businesses are now major fixtures on the city’s landscapes. Exelon is proud to be the presenting sponsor of this historic event that pairs art appreciation and environmental awareness.

The city features one hundred globes located along the lake from The Field Museum to Navy Pier. The Exelon Plaza at 10 S. Dearborn in Chicago’s Loop is the home of Jonathan Franklin’s globe entitled, "Chicago’s Green Leadership."

As an energy company, Exelon has great responsibility to preserve the environment and promote practices that keep the planet healthy. In that respect, being the presenting sponsor of CoolGlobes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet illustrates Exelon’s commitment to stopping global warming and heightening the awareness of the problems the environment faces.
