Quad Cities Station Employees Practice Year-round Environmental Stewardship

A group of Quad Cities Station employees literally took to the street on July 16 for a road cleaning event in front of the station on Route 84. The group donned their safety vests and gloves and made quick work of any trash they saw.

The week's heat had not reached full potential yet, though the sweat beads were definitely coming down. "That's OK," said Muhammad Siddiqui of the engineering department. "I like this activity because it is good for the environment and good for your health."

And while cleaning trash isn't an ideal activity since it shouldn't be there in the first place, other employees see it as an opportunity to make things better.

"We practice good environmental stewardship at Quad Cities Station, not only for us but our neighbors too," said Rita Kaufman, site records supervisor. "Often, litter ends up in the river and we try to do our part to make this a better place to live and work for everyone."

Quad Cities Station has a long history of environmental stewardship going back to the 1980s. Currently the station supports the reintroduction of alligator gar and endangered freshwater mussel propagation programs to Illinois waterways. The station also supports numerous small projects with state and federal resources agencies, as well as pollinator and wildlife habitat programs.
