More Than 1,100 Additional Workers Boost Local Economy As Nine Mile Point Unit 1 Begins 25th Planned Refueling Outage

Workforce more than doubles as team readies plant for safe, reliable operating cycle

OSWEGO, NY – Operators at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 1 removed the generator from service at 12:01 a.m. today to begin its 25th planned refueling outage, following a strong, reliable winter run.

To support the outage, the station will use the talents and expertise of more than 1,100 additional workers, many of whom travel to Nine Mile Point from outside the area. For several weeks preceding and during the outage, the influx of workers provides a significant boost to the local economy.

"Our refueling outage allows us to perform important maintenance that will ensure Nine Mile Point continues to operate safely and reliably, so that when temperatures dip like they did this winter, or soar like they will this summer, residents' important energy needs are met," said Site Vice President Peter Orphanos. "As always, we will complete our outage tasks with a focus on excellence and a commitment to safety and environmental stewardship."

During the outage, Exelon employees and supplemental workers will perform work on key plant components, including replacing the wiring in the main turbine generator to ensure reliable and efficient long-term operation. Technicians also will replace nearly one-third of the reactor's fuel and complete maintenance activities, testing and modifications that can only be done when the station is not generating electricity – all to ensure the unit operates at its best for the coming two-year cycle.

Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station is located seven miles northeast of Oswego and 50 miles north of Syracuse. The station can produce more than 1,937 megawatts of carbon-free electricity – enough to power nearly two million homes.
