Exelon Generation's Byron Station Completes Second Refueling Outage For 2017

Two outages in one year deliver boost to local businesses

BYRON, Ill.  — Operators returned Byron Generating Station Unit 2 to full power Tuesday, successfully completing a scheduled refueling outage that began at the start of the month.

More than 1,200 skilled workers from local union halls worked alongside station employees during the planned outage. The additional workers lodged in area hotels, shopped in local stores and patronized nearby restaurants, providing a significant and welcome economic boost for the second time this year. Byron’s Unit 1 executed a similar refueling outage in March.

“It’s a great boost for our business to host extra outage workers for these two-outage years, which luckily come every three years,” said Rachel Mason, assistant manager at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Rockford. “As one of the closest lodging options for the Byron plant, we see a substantial increase in occupancy during the outages and are grateful for workers who stay with us for up to six weeks.”

“We completed our second refueling outage of 2017 with precision and ahead of schedule,” said Tom Chalmers, acting site vice president for Byron Station.
“We look forward to providing safe, clean and reliable energy for the region.”

During the outage, workers performed nearly 15,000 detailed inspections, maintenance activities and equipment upgrades. Exelon Generation invests millions each year to upgrade its plants, installing new equipment and enhancing components to make the facilities even safer and more efficient.
This outage included significant work on Byron’s turbine systems, and technicians replaced about one-third of the reactor’s fuel.
