Calvert Cliffs Unit 2 Shut Down

Operators at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant shut down Unit 2 today at 6:20 p.m.

LUSBY, MD — Operators at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant shut down Unit 2 today at 6:20 p.m., after identifying a fault in the steam generator feed pump, part of the system which helps create steam that turns the turbine. With the pump unavailable, Operators took actions per procedure to safely shut down the unit.

Technicians will repair the pump and perform comprehensive tests before returning Unit 2 to service. Calvert Cliffs Unit 1 continues to operate at full power.

Calvert Cliffs is located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County and is Maryland’s only nuclear energy facility. The station is home to two pressurized water reactors capable of generating 1,768 megawatts combined. Units 1 and 2 began commercial operation in 1975 and 1977, respectively.
