LaSalle County Generating Station Files License Renewal Application

Application to the NRC seeks to extend the operating license

WARRENVILLE, Ill. (Dec. 9, 2014) - Exelon Generation filed a license renewal application today with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for LaSalle County Generating Station in Marseilles, Ill. LaSalle Unit 1 is currently licensed to operate until 2022 and Unit 2 until 2023. The application filing begins a multiyear review by the NRC to extend the station's license by an additional 20 years.

LaSalle Station is part of Illinois' vital nuclear power industry, which provides 48 percent of the state's electricity and about 90 percent of its carbon-free electricity. The station alone produces enough electricity to power more than 2.3 million typical American homes. The station also directly and indirectly drives nearly $1 billion annually into the Illinois economy and pays $24 million in annual property taxes.

"For decades, LaSalle County Station has been a tremendous energy asset for Illinois, providing safe and abundant clean energy," said Bryan Hanson, Exelon Nuclear chief operating officer. "In addition, these facilities have been important economic engines in the communities where they operate."

The application is the result of two years of work by an Exelon team to conduct a detailed review of historical equipment and component performance, and a rigorous review of existing maintenance and engineering programs to ensure the station is capable of maintaining the plant's state-of -the-art systems over the extended license period. Combined, the application totals approximately 2,100 pages and reviews more than 218,000 plant components.

The NRC's license renewal process is extensive. Over the next two years, the NRC will review the application for both safety and environmental impacts and teams of NRC staff will inspect the facility to verify information in the application. The public will have an opportunity to comment on the application and attend NRC-hosted public meetings for the nuclear facility. A final decision on the application could arrive in 2016.
