CHICAGO (Dec. 1, 2014) - Employee volunteers from across Exelon's family of companies participated in more than 130 service projects in Illinois, Maryland and Pennsylvania to celebrate #GivingTuesday (December 2). Approximately 1,300 employees volunteered over 9,700 hours to projects in November, including sorting and wrapping toys for the holidays, mentoring students and packaging food for needy families at organizations in the communities Exelon serves.
#GivingTuesday, a call to action inspired by the retail industry's, "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" shopping days, encourages individuals to give back to their communities through small acts of kindness during the holiday season. Exelon will match employee charitable donations of $100 or more dollar-for-dollar and give an additional $100 to employees' charities of choice on #GivingTuesday.
"As the holiday season begins, employees are demonstrating Exelon's commitment to giving back by volunteering and donating for #GivingTuesday," said Steve Solomon, vice president of corporate relations at Exelon. "We are proud to support our employees in their efforts to make a difference in the communities where they live and work."
In addition to donating volunteer hours, employees at 38 work locations in northern Illinois will donate hats, gloves, and other cold-weather essentials to Warm Up Chicago, a clothing drive organized by Chicago Cares that collects items for thousands of seniors, adults and children in the Chicagoland area.
#GivingTuesday volunteer events were attended by employee volunteers from all of Exelon's businesses, including ComEd in northern Illinois, PECO in southeastern Pennsylvania, Constellation and BGE in central Maryland, and Exelon Generation and Exelon Business Services Company in all three regions.
Exelon actively connects with the communities it serves by looking for ways to engage and give back. This year, employees already have donated more than 96,000 volunteer hours and over $6 million through Exelon's Employee Giving Campaign to benefit civic and non-profit organizations that support the company's commitment to education, environmental stewardship, diversity and inclusion, and community enrichment.
