BYRON, Ill. - Exelon Nuclear's Byron Generating Station recently awarded scholarships to five local high school graduates for their impressive efforts during the 2010-11 school year.
Roy Slick of Byron High School, Allison Mengel and Kaitlyn Slack of Stillman Valley High School, and Jacob Ferencak and Thomas Lee of Oregon High School were chosen by their respective school's faculty to receive the Byron Station scholarships.
"These students have excelled in and out of the classroom," said Byron Station Site Vice President Tim Tulon. "Exelon Nuclear and Byron Station are proud to give these awards that will help the students in their continued education."
Slick, who was a multiple scholarship winner at awards night at Byron High School, will be attending the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) and will study Chemical Engineering. Slick was an all-state achiever in Scholastic Bowl while in high school.
Mengel will be attending Northern Illinois University studying biology and pre-pharmacy. The Illinois State Scholar will also participate on the NIU marching band. Slack, who will attend the University of Iowa for radiation sciences, was the student body president and a member of the cheerleading squad.
Ferencak will study biology at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. At Oregon he was on the football, track and wrestling teams. He was named the Big Northern Conference's All-Conference Scholar Athlete. Lee, an Illinois State Scholar who is also attending UW-Platteville, was a multiple award-winner at the Oregon High School awards night, including the Exceptional Effort award.
Byron Station salutes these students and wishes them well in their future academic endeavors.
