CORDOVA, Ill. (Sept. 9, 2009) - Operators at Quad Cities Generating Station took Unit 1 offline at approximately 2 a.m. today to replace a small section of pipe that carries water to various plant systems.
Station engineers identified a pinhole size opening on the pipe during normal surveillance testing performed Tuesday. The pipe replacement work cannot be done while the unit is operating. While the unit is offline, plant employees will perform additional preventative maintenance work on the unit.
Quad Cities Unit 2 continues to operate at full power. Electrical service for Exelon customers will not be affected while Quad Cities Unit 1 is offline.
Quad Cities Generating Station is located approximately 150 miles west of Chicago. With both units at full power, the site produces more than 1700 net megawatts, which is enough electricity for approximately 1 million homes.
