Exelon's PECO uses a smart vehicle management system.
In 2013, PECO began installing an automated vehicle management system that provides data driven feedback. Since PECO completed installation on more than 1,100 fleet vehicles in March 2014, this monitoring technology has delivered a wide array of benefits. It has also helped Exelon meet a long list of goals: safety, cost savings, environmental impact and operational performance - including emergency response and outrage restoration times.
The system is at work with our people in the field - and it makes us better.
The system reinforces safe driving behaviors with employees by analyzing trends around speed limit adherence, braking and acceleration. This has resulted in fewer accidents. In 2014, there was a 28 percent decrease in employee vehicle accidents over the previous year and better driving practices.
Implementing the system also boosts our environmental performance. It's reducing non-productive vehicle idling (for every hour of idling, approximately one gallon of fuel is used), and helps reduce our carbon footprint. Its routing capabilities allow supervisors and dispatchers to direct crews around congested traffic areas, provide directions and estimate time of arrival.
Our customers benefit too. For example, PECO received a late night natural gas odor call. The system identified all of the nearby, qualified responders. When all of them said they would have difficulties getting to this customer within the one-hour response time window, the system located an off-shift qualified responder in the area. Our promise was kept.
It's a story of employee innovation that could improve all of Exelon.
The idea was initiated by a team at PECO; they made a business case and initially were granted a pilot with 20 vehicles. When the initial pilot yielded positive results, the program was expanded to 300 units. Ultimately, the system was rolled out to the entire fleet.
Even after full fleet installation, there is still much work to be done.
We continue to train supervisors and seek employee feedback. Longer term, PECO will be demonstrating the value of the system, tracking our day-to-day performance improvements and helping to decide if this tool has applications elsewhere within Exelon.
