Cromby Unit 1 and Unit 2 went into commercial operation in 1954 and 1955, respectively. Both units were retired from service in 2011. Unit 1, which operated on coal, was one of Exelon Generation’s most utilized non-nuclear generators and in 2011, before it's retirement, the unit marked 400,000 hours of operation. At the time of its retirement in 2011, Unit 2 could operate on either oil or natural gas.
Cromby employs sophisticated emergency response plans to protect public health and safety. These plans are reviewed and approved by state governments and regulatory agencies. The emergency planning includes coordination with local counties, municipalities and school districts.
