President and Chief Executive Officer, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE)
Kenneth W. DeFontes Jr., 61, joined BGE in 1972 as an associate engineer. As president and chief executive officer, DeFontes is responsible for leadership of BGE’s operations and overall performance associated with service reliability, customer satisfaction, financial management, and regulatory and external affairs. Headquartered in Baltimore, BGE is Maryland’s largest gas and electric utility, delivering power to more than 1.2 million electric customers and more than 650,000 natural gas customers in central Maryland. The company’s approximately 3,000 employees are committed to the safe and reliable delivery of gas and electricity, as well as enhanced energy management, conservation, environmental stewardship and community assistance. BGE is a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, one of the nation’s leading energy services companies. Exelon is headquartered in Chicago and trades on the NYSE under the ticker EXC.
Prior to joining Exelon, DeFontes served as president and chief executive officer of BGE. He also served as vice president, Electric Transmission and Distribution for the utility from 2000 to 2004 and has held various leadership positions, including supervisor, general supervisor, manager and vice president.
DeFontes served in the Maryland Air National Guard from 1972 to 1978 and was honorably discharged as staff sergeant. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a board member of the American Gas Association and Southeastern Electric Exchange. DeFontes’ other memberships include Chair of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Board of Trustees, Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore Board of Directors, Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering National Advisory Council, The Center Club, and Baltimore Country Club.
DeFontes holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and a master's degree in business administration from Loyola University in Maryland.
DeFontes is married and has one son.
