Senior Vice President and Chief Information & Innovation Officer, Exelon Corporation

Profile

Sunil (Sonny) Garg oversees all aspects of information technology for Exelon Corporation, the leading U.S. competitive energy provider, and for its operating companies. In this role, he is responsible for transforming Exelon’s 1,300-employee IT department by modernizing IT infrastructure, rationalizing applications, investing in high-value technologies, and developing an IT employee training academy and technical career paths. He also is charged with delivering substantial synergy savings from the integration of Exelon’s and Constellation’s IT systems and departments following the companies’ 2012 merger.

Professional History

For more than 20 years, Garg has held leadership roles in the private, public and nonprofit sectors. He has spent the past decade integrating and restructuring departments and divisions across Exelon to create sustainable, high-performing environments that deliver outstanding financial and operational results and enhance employee engagement and commitment.

From 2010 to 2012, Garg served as president of Exelon Power, where he oversaw the safe retirement of 1,000 megawatts of coal-fired generation, integrated a $1 billion wind company acquisition and grew the fleet by 50 percent. Prior to that, as senior vice president for human resources at Exelon, he modernized the HR department and improved productivity by 30 percent. As vice president of finance, Garg designed and executed Exelon’s $350 million cost management initiative in the wake of the 2008 financial collapse.  Garg previously served as vice president of commercial operations, where he improved the company’s operational and financial performance while increasing employee engagement scores. Garg joined Exelon in 2002 as director of supply business operations, a role in which he centralized and consolidated Exelon’s supply chains, saving $120 million.

Prior to Exelon, Garg served as an assistant to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. As a White House Fellow appointed by President Bill Clinton, Garg served as senior advisor to the deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. He also was an associate with The Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago, where he conducted fieldwork on Chicago’s South Side and authored numerous reports on youth and community development in inner-city neighborhoods.

Civic Involvement

Garg is a Henry Crown Leadership Fellow at the Aspen Institute. He also serves on the boards of the University of Chicago’s Booth School’s Social Enterprise Initiative, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Interfaith Youth Core, the Clean Energy Trust and Upaya Social Ventures, and is vice chair of the Chapin Hall board of directors. In addition, Garg co-chairs Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Chicago NEXT Committee on Clean Tech, serves on Mayor Emanuel’s Green Ribbon Committee and co-chairs the Chicago regional panel for the White House Fellows program.

Education

Garg earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Chicago, a master’s degree in business administration at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business and a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Family

Garg lives in Chicago with his wife and two daughters.
