Make safety the #1 workplace priority (May 2006)
Practicing workplace electrical safety is everyone's responsibility - employers' and employees' - and makes good business sense. Follow these tips to keep your workplace safe:
- Make sure large stationary machinery (copiers, refrigerators, etc.) is grounded to prevent electric shock to employees. Newer office equipment and small appliances are manufactured with grounded, three-pronged cords. Never remove the third (grounding) prong from any three-prong piece of equipment.
- Never overload electrical outlets. Overloaded outlets carry too much electricity, which can generate heat in undetectable amounts. The heat causes wear on the internal wiring system and can ignite a fire. Make sure employees have a sufficient number of outlets for their equipment.
- Check cords for fraying and exposed wiring. If a cord's outer jacket is damaged, moisture could be absorbed, which could cause a short circuit or current leakage. If wires are exposed, employees may sustain a shock.
- Place cords out of harm's way. Cords should never be placed on radiators, steam pipes, walls or windows. Particular attention should be paid to connections behind furniture, since files and bookcases may be pushed tightly against electric outlets, severely bending the cord at the plug.
Make every day a safe day!
