National Electrical Safety Month tips from PECO, Pennsylvania's safest utility
Make safety a priority in your business. We do.
Start off the month by making electric safety a priority in the workplace. Review the following checklist to keep your workplace safe.
- Is office equipment that is manufactured with grounded plugs (three-prong plugs) used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions?
- Is the third (grounding) prong present (not removed) on equipment requiring grounded plugs?
- Are items from which the third prong has been removed reported by employees for repair and removed from service?
- Has every employee been trained to notify appropriate maintenance personnel and disconnect electrical equipment when it malfunctions or emits a strange odor or sound? (This is a great item for new employee orientation.)
- Are extension cords kept clear of doorways and other areas where they can be stepped on or otherwise damaged?
- Have employees been instructed never to plug extension cords into each other, fasten them with staples, hang them from nails, or suspended them by wire?
- Are all worn, cracked or frayed cords and cables removed from service and labeled do not use?”
- Are cords always wrapped or folded loosely enough to prevent damage to internal wiring?
- Are cords always kept off radiators, steam pipes, walls and windows? Are cords always kept out from under carpets, rugs and furniture?
- Do employees know to pull the plug, not the cord, when disconnecting electrical items?
- Are space heaters, microwave ovens, and other high-current devices plugged directly into wall receptacles and not into strips or extension cords?
