Exelon Generation Completes Installation of State-of-the-Art Siren System for Oyster Creek

 Comprehensive Testing Schedule Announced

Forked River, N.J. – Exelon Generation has completed the installation of a new state-of-the-art siren system around the Oyster Creek Generating Station, part of a $13 million investment that began in 2010 to upgrade sirens around the company’s nuclear stations.

The new system includes 42 sirens with improved sound coverage and battery back-up capability. This ensures the sirens will be able to operate and provide notification if electrical service is interrupted.

The new system will now undergo extensive testing in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirements. The test schedule is as follows:

• Thursday, May 23 at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – full three minute test

• Wednesday, May 29 – four separate tests beginning at 9 a.m. (three minutes each)
In the event of inclement weather, these tests will occur on Thursday, May 30.

Tests of the existing sirens will continue until the new sirens are certified by FEMA. A three-minute test will be performed at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4.

"Protecting the health and safety of the public is our top priority and emergency planning is a key part of that effort," said Garey Stathes, Oyster Creek site vice president. "The siren system upgrade strengthens Ocean County’s ability to alert the public in the unlikely event of a station emergency or severe weather advisory."

The sirens are part of Oyster Creek’s extensive emergency response system that includes detailed emergency plans; dedicated off-site facilities; and training and public information materials. A postcard announcing the test schedule has been mailed to all residents who reside within the Oyster Creek emergency planning zone.

The purpose of the sirens is to notify residents to tune to an Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio or television station in case of an emergency.

Oyster Creek is located 60 miles east of Philadelphia in Ocean County, New Jersey, and currently produces electricity for more than 600,000 homes.
