Byron Station Workers Complete Unit 2 Refueling Outage

Operators at Exelon Nuclear’s Byron Generating Station returned Unit 2 to the electrical grid Monday night, ending a scheduled refueling outage that began last month.

BYRON, Ill. - Operators at Exelon Nuclear's Byron Generating Station returned Unit 2 to the electrical grid Monday night, ending a scheduled refueling outage that began last month.

"Our workforce safely completed a large amount of work that will ensure the safe, reliable production of environmentally-friendly electricity for the next operating cycle," said site vice president Tim Tulon. "I applaud the Exelon team and the contract crew for their quality performance and commitment to safety."

In addition to refueling the reactor, workers performed extensive inspections, testing and maintenance on a wide range of components and equipment.

"I thank the local communities for their patience with any disruption in the normal flow of traffic in the area," Tulon said, "though the outage was a great opportunity for many workers to get weeks or even months of employment at a time when the economy is lacking in jobs."

Byron Unit 1 continued to operate during the Unit 2 outage.

Byron Generating Station is in Ogle County, Ill., about 25 miles southwest of Rockford.
