Braidwood Unit 1 Shuts Down for Planned Refueling and Maintenance

Operators safely took Braidwood Generating Station Unit 1 offline at 11 p.m. Sunday for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.

BRACEVILLE, Ill. – Operators safely took Braidwood Generating Station Unit 1 offline at 11 p.m. Sunday for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.

During the maintenance outage, workers will perform more than 9,500 inspections and maintenance activities on a variety of plant components and systems. This includes replacing one-third of the reactor’s fuel. Many of the activities performed during the maintenance outage cannot be performed while the unit is operating.

To support this effort, the station will use the talents and expertise of more than 1,500 additional workers. The supplemental workers provide a temporary economic benefit to the community.

“The additional workers means more dollars spent locally on goods and services,” said John Greuling, Will County Center for Economic Development President and CEO.  “This maintenance project should be a real shot in the arm for the local economy.”

Braidwood Unit 2 will continue to supply electricity to the area while Unit 1 is offline.

Braidwood Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station’s two nuclear energy units can produce a total of more than 2,300 megawatts net at full power - enough electricity to power more than 2 million homes.
