BRAIDWOOD, ILL - Braidwood Generating Station Unit 1 automatically shut down at 5:04 p.m. CT today, when the unit's turbine tripped offline.
Although the cause of the shutdown is under investigation, initial indications point to a fault on a plant instrumentation system component.
The plant responded as designed, safely and without incident. There was no steam release associated with the shutdown nor was there any risk to the public.
The Braidwood Unit 1 shutdown will not have an impact on electrical service to Exelon customers. Braidwood Unit 2 continues to operate at full power.
Braidwood Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. With both units running at full power, Braidwood generates enough electricity to power more than 2 million average American homes.
