Peach Bottom Employees Deliver Gifts of Hope to Area Shelter
“Hope Sacks” campaign provides necessities, peace of mind for shelter residents
Delta, PA – Twenty employees from Exelon Nuclear’s Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in Delta volunteered their time last month to gather household items and cash donations for the station’s springtime “Hope Sacks” campaign. Throughout April, members from Peach Bottom’s chapter of Women in Nuclear (WIN) collected health and personal products from their coworkers and assembled care packages in brightly colored sacks for victims of domestic violence and their children staying in ACCESS-York’s shelter, a program of YWCA York.
The same volunteers were on hand last week to stuff and deliver more than 100 Hope Sacks to ACCESS-York. In the last three years, Peach Bottom employees have distributed more than 300 Hope Sacks and over $1,000 to the shelter.
“The ‘Hope Sacks’ campaign is a great example of people helping people,” said Deb Stock, YWCA York CEO. “In this economy, it really gives our clients hope and encouragement when they see that there are others out there who truly care about them.”
In 2009, ACCESS-York served over 2000 adult victims of domestic violence and 567 of their children. Some of the services offered include: a 24-hour hotline, an emergency shelter, transitional housing, legal advocacy, medical advocacy, and individual and group counseling.
“It is extremely rewarding to have a positive, personal impact on families in the community who need our help,” said Peach Bottom employee and WIN member, Becky Salvadore, who has seen the Hope Sacks project blossom at Peach Bottom since it began in 2008. “I feel very proud to be part of such a dedicated and generous team!”
While Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station has a business mission to generate safe and reliable power to more than two million homes in the area, the station and its employees are also very active in the community. Peach Bottom employees volunteer, host tours, visit area schools, mentor students, appear at community events and financially support dozens of civic organizations each year.
