Limerick Unit 2 Shuts Down For Planned Refueling and Maintenance

Operators safely shut down Limerick Generating Station Unit 2 for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage shortly after midnight EDT Monday, March 23.

POTTSTOWN, PA (March 23, 2009) - Operators safely shut down Limerick Generating Station Unit 2 for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage shortly after midnight EDT Monday, March 23.

This shutdown completes a successful run of 402 days for Unit 2 and sets a new record at Limerick for a dual unit continuous run of 363 days.

“Both Unit 1 and Unit 2 have been online for a year, which represents the station’s high degree of reliability for the region’s electricity supply,” said Chris Mudrick, Limerick site vice president.  “The team has been preparing for this outage for more than a year and we are now ready to execute our plan safely and efficiently.  A successful refueling outage will enable us to safely and reliably operate the unit during the next two years.”

During the outage, workers will perform approximately 19,000 activities on a variety of plant components and systems. This includes replacing approximately a third of the reactor’s fuel and performing a series of extensive inspections. Many of the activities performed during the shutdown cannot be performed while the plant is running, and all are designed to ensure the safe and reliable production of electricity through the 24-month operating cycle.

To support this effort, the station will utilize the talents and expertise of close to 2,000 additional workers. These men and women are skilled workers from other Exelon sites, local union halls, travelers from outside the area and specialized vendors. They all provide a temporary benefit for the local economy.

Limerick Unit 1 will continue to generate electricity during the Unit 2 shutdown.  Limerick Generating Station is located approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia.  With both units at full power, the site can produce enough electricity for 2 million homes.
