PEACH BOTTOM UNIT 3 REFUELING OUTAGE BEGINS

State-of-the-art equipment upgrades and maintenance tasks underway

Operators at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station removed Unit 3 from service early this morning for a planned refueling and maintenance outage.

The purpose of the outage is to refuel the reactor and make equipment modifications that will ensure safe and reliable operations for another two years of continuous operations. Peach Bottom Unit 2 will continue to generate electricity during the outage.

The Peach Bottom team has been working hard all year to plan a safe and effective outage," said Site Vice President, Mike Massaro. "The equipment modifications on Unit 3 are part of our extended power uprate (EPU) project which, when completed, will allow us to generate safe and reliable power for an additional 250,000 regional homes and businesses.

Since 2010, Exelon has been working with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to complete a comprehensive design review and perform a host of EPU equipment upgrades, including the replacement of high and low-pressure turbines, steam dryers and main power transformers on both units. The Unit 2 and Unit 3 generators were overhauled and feed water pumps and motors were also upgraded.

In addition to more than 800 permanent Exelon employees, the outage requires nearly 3,000 additional supplemental workers, many of whom travel from other locations and help boost the local economy each year.

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station is located on the west bank of the Conowingo Pond (Susquehanna River) in York County, Pa. The station is home to two boiling water reactors capable of generating more than 2,280 megawatts combined. Both reactors began commercial operation in 1974.
