BYRON, Ill. - Byron Generating Station Unit 1 automatically shut down at 11:01 a.m. CDT Tuesday. Initial indications are that ice intrusion interrupted power on one of the unit's transformers.
Station experts will make the repairs to the transformer and return the unit to service. The unit responded as designed during the shutdown.
Byron Unit 2 continues to operate at full power.
Byron Station is located in Ogle County, Ill., about 25 miles southwest of Rockford. With both units at full power, the site produces enough electricity for about 2.3 million homes.
