MORRIS, Ill. (Dec. 3, 2013) —Operators at Exelon Generation’s Dresden Station returned Unit 2 to full power at 11:38 a.m. today following the completion of the unit’s 23rd refueling outage on Sunday, Dec. 1.

During the 20-day outage, Exelon employees and supplemental workers performed nearly 10,000 activities, including equipment upgrades, safety inspections, tests, and plant improvements. The unit began its scheduled refueling outage Monday, Nov. 11. Dresden Unit 2’s first refueling outage was conducted in 1971.

“We appreciate the efforts of our employees and the more than 1,600 supplemental workers that supported us,” said Dresden Site Vice President Shane Marik. “The work done during refueling outages is crucial to ensuring plant safety and long-term equipment reliability.”

Dresden Unit 3 continued to operate during the Unit 2 refueling outage.

Dresden Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station’s two operating units can produce more than 1,800 megawatts net of electricity, enough to power 1.2 million average homes. Dresden Unit 1, which began commercial operation in 1960 and was retired in 1978, has been designated a Nuclear Historic Landmark by the American Nuclear Society.
