State-of-the-Art Equipment Upgrades and Inspections Underway at Limerick Generating Station

Exelon Nuclear employees and supplemental workers provide a major economic benefit to the region each year as they perform over 13,000 outage-related activities, including state-of-the-art equipment upgrades, safety inspections and plant improvements.

Pottstown, PA - Limerick Township residents may have noticed a steady stream of busses travelling near Limerick Generating Station in the past week, a sure sign that more than 2,000 highly trained supplemental workers are in town to support Limerick’s 2012 refueling outage, which began on Unit 1 earlier today.  Exelon Nuclear employees and supplemental workers provide a major economic benefit to the region each year as they perform over 13,000 outage-related activities, including state-of-the-art equipment upgrades, safety inspections and plant improvements. All are designed to enhance the facility’s operational strength and ensure Limerick’s ability to provide safe, reliable, carbon-free electricity throughout Unit 1’s planned two-year operating cycle.

“Safety is always a priority with each task we perform,” said Bill Maguire, Limerick site vice president. “Preparation for the thousands of activities has been underway for more than a year.  The refueling outage and equipment upgrades will ensure continued safe operation of the facility.”

Major work to be performed includes the replacement of service water piping systems, an integral part of the plant’s cooling systems; installation of new automatic speed drives that supply power to vital systems; and a number of electrical upgrades. These activities cannot be performed while Unit 1 is online.

Limerick Unit 2 will continue to generate electricity during the Unit 1 outage.  Limerick Generating Station is located approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia.  With both units at full power, the site can produce enough carbon-free electricity for 2 million homes.
