Byron Station Unit 2 Begins Generating Electricity

BYRON, Ill. (Feb. 7, 2012) – Byron Generating Station Unit 2 began producing electricity at 12:02 p.m. today, following its reconnection to the electrical grid.

Teams of technical experts completed hundreds of maintenance and inspection tasks while the unit was offline, triple checking many of the redundant safety systems and other components to ensure its safe start-up and continued operation.

“Our highly trained engineers and operators performed exceptionally well in taking the proper safe steps to analyze data and make repairs, and then thoroughly checked and tested systems before restoring the unit to service,” said Byron Station Site Vice President Tim Tulon. “Byron Station’s redundant safety systems are designed to operate if needed, and the systems passed with flying colors.”

The unit automatically came offline on Monday, Jan. 30 when power to an insulator in the facility’s switchyard failed. The insulator has been repaired.

Byron Unit 1 continued to safely supply electricity to customers.

Byron Generating Station is in Ogle County, Ill., about 25 miles southwest of Rockford.
