BYRON, Ill. - Security personnel will train in the quarry east of the Stone Quarry Recreation Park in preparation for an upcoming Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) security evaluation at Exelon Nuclear's Byron Generating Station. The training will take place during the day from Sunday, Aug. 29 through Friday, Sept. 3. The purpose of this graded evaluation is to validate the effectiveness of the station's security plan.
The Byron Forest Preserve District has offered the use of the quarry located behind the recreation park on German Church Road. Neighbors living near the quarry may see activity or hear noise from this location on these days.
Security personnel, dressed in military style clothing, will train using Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) weapons, which operate similar to a high-tech laser tag system. The MILES equipment looks and sounds like real weapons, but they do NOT fire any projectiles.
The training location is situated away from the other facilities at Stone Quarry and will be roped off for access, as the public will not be allowed near the area.
