Byron Unit 2 Begins Planned Refueling and Maintenance Outage After Record Run

 Unit Completes 541-Day Breaker-to-Breaker Performance

BYRON, Ill. – Byron Generating Station began its scheduled refueling and maintenance outage for Unit 2 at 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 18.

The outage marks the completion of a 541-day breaker-to-breaker run (continuous operation between refueling outages) for the unit – the longest continuous run for either unit in Byron Station history. Breaker-to-breaker operations are indicative of a high level of equipment reliability and overall plant performance.

“Our employees are committed to performing every work task correctly the first time, thus ensuring the safe and efficient performance of our units,” said Dan Enright, Byron site vice president. “Our goal now is to safely complete all the work needed to return the unit to service, preparing it for another 18 months of safe and reliable operation.”

During the maintenance outage, workers will perform more than 10,000 activities on a variety of plant components and systems. This includes replacing approximately a third of the reactor’s fuel assemblies.

The station will utilize the talents and expertise of more than 1,500 additional workers during the outage. The supplemental workers include employees from other Exelon sites as well as contractors. Many of these individuals travel to Byron from outside the area and provide a temporary benefit for the local economy.

While the unit is down, residents should be aware that one of the cooling towers will not produce any water vapor cloud. This is normal during a shutdown.

Byron’s Unit 1 will continue to supply clean electricity to Exelon customers during the Unit 2 outage.
