MARSEILLES, Ill. (Aug. 15, 2009) - LaSalle Generating Station Unit 2 automatically shutdown at 4:06 p.m. Saturday, when the unit's turbine generator tripped offline.
A turbine generator is a non-nuclear system that uses steam to rotate the generator to produce electricity.
Although the cause of the shutdown is under investigation, station operators are focusing on a digital control system that monitors turbine performance.
The plant responded as expected, safely and without incident. There was no risk to the public and no injuries associated with the unit coming offline.
The LaSalle Unit 2 shutdown will not have an impact on electrical service to Exelon customers. LaSalle Unit 1 continues to operate at full power.
LaSalle Station is located approximately 75 miles southwest of Chicago. With both units at full power, the site produces more than 2,200 megawatts net, which is enough electricity for 2.3 million homes.
