Three Mile Island Sirens to be Tested June 25

On Thursday, June 25 at 12:15 p.m. EDT all 96 emergency notification sirens in the 10-mile radius around Three Mile Island Generating Station will be sounded for three minutes.

LONDONDERRY TOWNSHIP, PA (June 23, 2009) - On Thursday, June 25 at 12:15 p.m. EDT all 96 emergency notification sirens in the 10-mile radius around Three Mile Island Generating Station will be sounded for three minutes.  Exelon Nuclear is conducting the test in cooperation with Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York Counties and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA).

A full three-minute sounding of the sirens is required on an annual basis.  TMI conducts routine electronic testing of the sirens on a weekly basis.

“Should there be an actual emergency, residents where sirens are located should tune their radios or televisions to a local channel for detailed instructions and what action they need to take,” said PEMA Director Robert P. French. “These tests ensure the system is working properly.”

Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties will activate the sirens from their county 911 Communications Centers.  Personnel from TMI cannot sound the sirens; only county emergency management officials have the capability and authority to do so.

The purpose of the sirens is to notify residents to tune into an Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio or television station in case of an emergency at TMI or tornadoes, floods, or other events requiring notification to residents.  An EAS test message will be broadcast in conjunction with the siren test.
