Nine Mile Point Drill Set for October 20

Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station will conduct an emergency preparedness exercise on Tuesday, Oct. 20, to evaluate the station’s emergency plan.

Oswego, NY— Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station will conduct an emergency preparedness exercise on Tuesday, Oct. 20, to evaluate the station’s emergency plan. Oswego County will participate in the exercise and staff its emergency response center. The drill uses simulated emergency scenarios to test the ability of plant personnel and offsite emergency organizations to respond quickly and effectively to a plant emergency.

Nine Mile Point performs a number of emergency preparedness drills each year to ensure readiness. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission independently evaluates Nine Mile Point’s comprehensive emergency preparedness program every two years. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will evaluate the performance of state and county emergency organizations during the exercise.

"At Exelon, we take our emergency preparedness responsibilities very seriously," said Nine Mile Point Site Vice President Pete Orphanos. "Throughout the year, we work with a dedicated team of emergency management professionals across the state with one goal in mind: keeping families safe in the unlikely event of an emergency. We greatly appreciate our strong relationship with county and state professionals."

The exercise will begin in the morning and conclude in the afternoon. Residents near Nine Mile Point may see emergency vehicles staged in the area or hear plant public address announcements. Similarly, residents may notice increased activity around other facilities used for emergency response, including the Emergency Operations Facility and Joint Information Center located at the Oswego County airport. Offsite emergency sirens will not be used.

Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station is located seven miles northeast of Oswego and 50 miles north of Syracuse. The station can produce more than 1,937 megawatts of carbon-free electricity – enough to power more than two million typical homes.
