This past year, Exelon committed to expanding Youth Guidance’s Becoming A Man (BAM) program by providing a three-year, $3 million grant to the organization.

Helping young men live safely and strive for success.

The BAM program recognizes the various difficult circumstances that young men from disadvantaged communities face. BAM strives to prevent young, high school men from entering at-risk environments by focusing on developing and supporting the social and emotional skills necessary to succeed.

The program teaches young men how to learn and utilize social cognitive skills, such as slowing down their thinking, considering the perspective of others and identifying and evaluating consequences before acting. The program model integrates cognitive behavioral therapy, youth engagement and rites of passage work. On a quarterly basis, BAM students meet with a group of Exelon volunteers and focus on ways to hone in on these skills and how to address tough issues with greater positive impact.

With Exelon’s help, young men’s lives are transformed.

BAM's foundation rests upon six core values: integrity, accountability, self-determination, positive anger expression, respect for women and visionary goal setting. Exelon volunteers help to facilitate activities such as speed networking, mock interviewing, and resume-writing to equip these students with career-readiness and life skills that lead to obtaining internships and jobs.

ComEd Energy Efficiency Program Manager and BAM volunteer, Dantawn Nicholson shared, “Volunteering for BAM has been a rewarding experience, as we mentor and support young men from disadvantaged communities, in an effort to see them succeed in spite of their obstacles. Understanding the importance of male mentors in the lives of these young men and the positive impact that male mentors had in my life, I am obligated to give back and pay it forward through volunteering with organizations such as BAM.”

Reducing violence and increasing graduation rates in the communities we serve is key.

A recent University of Chicago Crime Lab study found that BAM reduced violent crime arrests by 50 percent, reduced total arrests by 35 percent and increased on‑time high school graduation rates by 19 percent for male students at Chicago Public Schools.

Exelon’s involvement with BAM is one way we provide energy for the community. With our assistance Youth Guidance is able to reach an additional 1,300 students each year. Find out how else we give back: http://www.exeloncorp.com/community/giving
