Exelon’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goal
Exelon 2020: A Low-Carbon Roadmap, our ambitious, industry-leading plan to address climate change, was launched in 2008. This new plan details a comprehensive approach and a host of initiatives being pursued by the Exelon family of companies to dramatically cut Exelon’s greenhouse gas emissions. The plan also describes how we intend to help the customers, communities and markets we serve curtail their own greenhouse gas emissions.
Exelon 2020 commits Exelon to the goal of reducing, offsetting or displacing more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020. This is an amount greater than Exelon’s current annual level of emissions and is the equivalent to taking 3 million cars off the road for a year. Exelon 2020 also includes advocacy for sound public policy that will address the climate change challenge as quickly, effectively and economically as is required.
In the interim, Exelon continues to pursue the voluntary goal we made in May 2005 under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Leaders program:
- To reduce its greenhouse (GHG) emissions by eight (8) percent from 2001 levels by the end of 2008;
- To work with, and encourage, its suppliers to reduce their GHG emissions; and
- To incorporate recognition of GHG emissions and their potential cost into its business analyses as a means to promote internal investment in climate-reducing activities.
Exelon made this pledge under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Climate Leaders program.
Since 2005, Exelon has been named annually to the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). CDP is supported by a group of institutional investors to seek disclosure of climate risk and opportunities from the world's largest companies, by market capitalization. The list of participating institutional investors grows each year; now close to 400 members with $57 trillion in assets managed. Each year, Innovest Strategic Value Advisors has been commissioned to prepare a thematic report based on a review of all responses received. Review Exelon's response to CDP6 submitted in May 2008.
In 2008, Exelon became the first U.S.-based utility to join the CDP Supply Chain Leadership Collaboration. One hundred of Exelon’s top suppliers, representing $2 billion in annual spend, have been invited to voluntarily report data on their GHG emissions, climate change strategies, and emissions reduction targets by participating in the survey. The information gathered will be used to assess the extent to which Exelon’s suppliers have taken steps to address climate change and it is anticipated that the information will also be able to be used to encourage them to further their climate change efforts and also identify opportunities for reducing costs and improving efficiency.
