At Exelon our commitment to the environment is integral to our corporate strategy.  Our vision is to build exceptional value by becoming the best and most consistently profitable electricity and gas company in the United States.  We understand that to be successful, we must constantly improve our environmental performance.

2007 Environmental Highlights

  • Exelon is on track to exceed our 2008 voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction commitment based on plant shutdowns and other GHG reduction programs.
  • Exelon Generation approved approximately $150 million for installation of SO2 scrubbers at its co-owned Keystone facility and the scrubber installation began.  Generation also procured and began installation of mercury CEMs and began optimization review of existing NOx controls at its coal units.
  • Exelon enhanced its commitment to renewables with Generation entering into a 20-year power purchase agreement for output of a 3 MW solar plant and with PECO securing regulatory approval of its request to early procure Alternative Energy Credits beginning in 2008.
  • Exelon’s focus on its own energy usage efficiency yielded projects and process changes resulting in a reduction of close to 12 million kWh annually.
  • ComEd, through its CARE program, voluntarily distributed over 1 million compact fluorescent light bulbs, helping customers to reduce their energy usage and costs.
  • PECO WINDSM sold 155,000 MWh of wind RECs to over 38,000 customers.
  • Generated over $10.6 million in value from recycling 2,100 tons of office waste, 8,900 tons of scrap metal and 812,000 gallons of used oil; reused over 90% of 150,000 tons of coal and scrubber byproduct.
  • Eight more Exelon organizations received ISO 14001 certifications for their environmental management programs; increasing to 60 percent the total of ISO 14001 certified operations within Exelon.
  • Exelon was named for the second consecutive year to both the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index and the Carbon Disclosure Project Climate Disclosure Leadership Index.

Global Reporting Initiative

Exelon recognizes the importance of transparent reporting.  In an effort to facilitate a comparison of our performance with others, Exelon has made a first attempt at determining its alignment with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Guidelines.  The Index below is aligned with the GRI G3 Guidelines.  We are learning as we go and this document is a work in progress that will be updated as new information is identified.
