Exelon has a strong tradition of community involvement – of committing our energy for the community. Volunteerism allows us to put a personal face on our corporate citizenship initiatives. We work to strengthen and enrich our communities not only with contributions of time and money, but also by increasing opportunities for youth through education and science. To ensure the security of our customers and our communities, we maintain both vigilance in emergency response preparation and public safety outreach.
Our vision includes the following community goals.
1. Advance our strong tradition of community service
Exelon’s Corporate Citizenship program strives to improve the quality of life for the people who live and work in our service territory and around our power plants. We seek to accomplish these goals through employee volunteer activities and executive involvement on non-profit boards.
- Our employees served nearly 61,000 hours as volunteers at a variety of organizations. More than 350 executives and employees serve on boards of local non-profit organizations. We serve our communities through environmental projects, United Way volunteer activities, student mentoring and recognition programs, cause-related walks and races, and renovation and refurbishing projects at schools and community agencies.
- Our Energy for the Community Employee Volunteer Awards is a recognition program for employee volunteers. During National Volunteer Week in 2011, we announced 12 winners and donated $100,000 to the non-profits they served.
- Exelon’s Dollars for Doers program rewards dedicated volunteers with small grants for the non-profit organization of their choice.

2. Strengthen and enrich the communities through corporate giving
Exelon believes that a broad approach is required to better enrich the communities we serve. Every company has a vision of tomorrow. Ours is pragmatic, focused on the people and programs we know will help us get there.
In 2011, Exelon made over 3,800 grants totaling nearly $25 million to non-profit organizations. Our employees donated over $4 million for the annual Exelon-United Way campaign. We focus our corporate giving in four areas and give to the communities in which we live and serve and encourage our employees to support the organizations that they value.
- Education. Programs that encourage students to stay in school and promote math and science. Exelon Corporation supports two Chicago Public School charter schools, the Rowe-Clark Math and Science Academy (High School) and the Rowe Elementary School providing children with access to the kind of education needed to compete and succeed in the global marketplace.
- Environment. Programs that improve the quality of our environment and promote energy efficiency. Exelon partnered with Habitat for Humanity International to launch a pilot program to weatherize 70 low-income households, helping to reduce energy use and utility bills for homeowners. We also committed $1.5 million to the Field Museum in support of efforts to conserve the Peruvian rainforest.
- Neighborhood Development. Partnerships with local civil organizations to improve the quality of life in our service areas. Our partnerships with both United Way of Metropolitan Chicago and of Southeastern Pennsylvania have created two signature programs that provide crucial out-of-school guidance for at-risk youths.
- Art & Culture. Cultural institutions with broad public exposure and programs designed to make arts and culture more accessible to a wider audience. PECO is the presenting sponsor of the African American Museum in Philadelphia's "Audacious Freedom" core exhibit, the Henry Ossawa Tanner exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and sponsors the PECO Multicultural Series at Penn’s Landing, a series of festivals that celebrate the city’s diversity all summer long. ComEd supports exhibits and events that appeal to diverse audiences such as the Muntu Dance Theatre’s African and African-American performances and the Day of the Dead exhibit at the National Museum of Mexican Art. 3. Assure the safety and security of our communities
We believe that our business relies upon the continued safety and reliability of the services we offer to our communities. The well-being of our employees and our communities is one of Exelon’s highest priorities. We demonstrate this commitment through total compliance with all safety regulations and an intensive program of educational outreach and safety initiatives, exceeding government expectations for safety.
- To ensure vigilance in emergency response preparation, our businesses maintain plans, conduct drills and perform exercises both independently and with local, state and federal emergency response organizations. Additionally, the energy industry has strategic relationships with government authorities to ensure these emergency plans are in place to maintain the reliability of the country’s energy systems.
- In July 2008, the Exelon Nuclear Security Transition team finalized the transition to in-house security operations.
- To further public safety outreach, Exelon Nuclear distributes brochures containing details about emergency warning systems, evacuation routes and other safety issues to residents living within each station’s emergency response area. Nuclear also holds Community Information Nights for local residents.
- ComEd and PECO give public electrical safety presentations that reach thousands of students and adults. They also provide training for contractors, excavators and home owners on how to safely work in the vicinity of ComEd facilities.
