Economic Development
Oyster Creek employs approximately 706 people, not including the plant’s security personnel. The plant generates 625-megawatts of electricity, contributing to a significant percentage of nuclear energy used by the state. Exelon provides approximately $2.4 million to New Jersey in property tax payments in 2010.
Environmental Commitment
Beyond reducing carbon emissions and providing cleaner sources of electricity, Exelon is invested in helping wildlife adapt to our presence. Oyster Creek was presented with a unique opportunity to help a struggling species; peregrines, an endangered species in New Jersey, nest in the vicinity of our Oyster Creek nuclear plant. The plant’s staff has worked with the New Jersey Endangered and Nongame Species Program to band and track the falcons’ migration.
Community Involvement
In total, New Jersey employees recorded more than 3,000 volunteer hours and Exelon provided nearly $300,000 to charitable causes in 2008. Exelon is proud of our employee culture of volunteerism, and we sponsor many initiatives on a higher level. Oyster Creek has the largest employee-run United Way campaign in Ocean County (employees have contributed about $500,000 over the past 5 years). The plant contributed another $70,000 toward community programs over a two-year period. Oyster Creek employees participate in a number of community and civic activities such as, the bi-annual American Red Cross Blood Drive, a Thanksgiving food drive and an annual clothing drive.
Power Plant

Oyster Creek Generating Station is located in Lacey Township, Ocean County, near the New Jersey shore. Oyster Creek began operating in 1969 as the first large-scale commercial nuclear power plant in the United States. Its single boiling water reactor produces 645 net MW, enough to power 600,000 average American homes.
