Economic Development
Exelon Corporate and Exelon Nuclear headquarters, ComEd, 6 nuclear plants and one peaker plant are all located in the northern and central regions of the state. In total, Exelon and its family of companies contribute more than 11,500 jobs to the local economy and more than $134 million in property tax payments.
Our delivery company, ComEd provides reliable electricity to 3.8 million customers. Exelon Nuclear owns and operates 6 nuclear plants and Exelon Power operates one peaker plant in the state. Exelon Energy serves commercial and industrial customers in Illinois given the restructured market that allows customer choice.
Exelon plays an active role in the community by promoting our service areas as business locations for new and expanding companies to enhance the economic vitality of the regions.
Environmental Commitment
We diligently seek to manage our environmental impact. Through community outreach projects like our partnership with The Field Museum of Chicago, we are able to help educate families and communities about renewable energy sources. Exelon is matching museum visitors’ participation in the Take One Step program up to $200,000 over the next two years. The Museum’s Take One Step is a voluntary program that encourages visitors to purchase credits to offset the carbon emissions generated by an average trip to The Field Museum. The $1 offset credit enters the carbon market and combats global warming through development of renewable energy technologies, restoration of degraded habitats and conservation of intact forests.
Community Involvement
At Exelon, our employees get involved where they work and live. Our Illinois employees recorded more than 32,000 volunteer hours and Exelon and its operating companies donated over $16 million in grants to charitable causes. Furthermore, our senior management team and other employees serve on numerous charitable boards throughout the Chicago area.
We believe that one of the best ways to benefit our communities is by supporting education. The Stay in School Initiative is Exelon's partnership with the United Way focused on spurring graduation rates and stemming truancy in three Chicago communities with some of the highest dropout rates in the city. Students who participated in the Stay in School Initiative last year had a 93% graduation rate, well above the 55% average in Chicago Public Schools.
