Economic Development
Exelon is one of Maryland’s largest employers and remains one of its top contributors to charitable and economic development organizations providing support to communities across the state. After merging with Constellation Energy in 2012, Exelon expanded its presence in the state with the addition of Constellation, BGE and BGE Home.
Exelon employs approximately 7,500 people in Maryland. Exelon’s Maryland companies contributed more than $253 million to the state via tax payments in 2012. Exelon Generation has also expanded its fleet with the addition of nine fossil power plants, and Maryland’s first wind energy project. Through Constellation’s nuclear joint venture with EDF Group (CENG), we now own a 50.01% share of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant, which operates two nuclear units in Lusby, Md.
BGE safely and reliably delivers electricity to more than 1.2 million customers and natural gas to more than 655,000 customers in central Maryland.
BGE HOME is one of the largest energy service providers to residential customers in central Maryland. It provides a full spectrum of heating, air conditioning, appliance, efficiency and home improvement products and services.
Constellation is a leading supplier of electricity and natural gas to residential and business customers coast-to-coast, including about two-thirds of the companies listed on the Fortune 100 index. Headquartered in Baltimore, Constellation is also a growing provider of green jobs and technology, with more than 1,300 megawatts of renewable power generation owned or under contract nationwide, including utility-scale solar, hydro, wind and biomass power plants. We also are a leading provider of innovative technology and services aimed at helping businesses make more efficient use of energy.
Constellation Energy Nuclear Group LLC (CENG), Constellation’s nuclear joint venture with EDF, owns five nuclear power units in Maryland and New York.
Environmental Commitment
Exelon is working to minimize the Conowingo plant’s impact on wildlife. The hydro plant currently operates two fish lifts. The west lift, adjacent to the right abutment, is currently operated under an agreement with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for American shad egg production and other research purposes. The newer east lift, which uses regulating gate bays for attraction flow, is used primarily to pass American shad and other migratory fishes during the April – June migration season.
In spring 2012, BGE began a three-year project to change the electric meters and upgrade the gas meters for all BGE residential and small commercial customers. Smart meters are digital meters that allow two-way communication with BGE through a wireless network. With the installation of smart meters, new features and programs are becoming available to customers, including online usage tracking, tips for cutting down on energy use and opportunities to earn bill credits for using less energy during peak periods.
As a part of Exelon’s retail business, Constellation will continue to invest in renewable energy, including a 16.1 megawatt solar facility under development in Emmitsburg, Md. Constellation’s environmental partnerships will continue to be a featured component of our corporate giving and employee volunteer efforts. In 2010, Constellation launched its annual EcoStar Grant program, which provides funding for community-based environmental projects in Maryland and nationwide.
Community Involvement
In 2011, Exelon’s Maryland employees recorded more than 125 hours of service and Exelon contributed over $300,000 to charitable causes. Beyond volunteerism at the employee level, Exelon’s power plants also sponsor community-wide charities. During the year the staff provide service time at New Hope Mission, Plumpton Zoo, Conowingo River Clean-up, Lower Susquehanna River Sweep, Port Deposit Annul Shad Festival and other community organizations.
In 2011, Constellation contributed $8.6 million to Maryland charitable organizations and employees reported more than 61,000 volunteer hours.
In 2012, BGE contributed approximately $1.3 million to Maryland organizations that address economic development, public safety, civic issues and other initiatives. Employees logged more than 18,000 volunteer hours.

Power Plant

Calvert Cliffs
In March 2000, Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant opened a new chapter in nuclear power history by becoming the first plant in the United States to earn 20-year extensions of its operating licenses from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant replaced the steam generators in Units 1 and 2 respectively and with Unit 2 set world records in duration and weld quality for this type of replacement. These replacements, as well as other major upgrades, will help the plant continue to safely generate clean electricity for many years to come. Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, a joint venture between Constellation Energy and EDF Group, owns 100 percent of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. Constellation Energy owns 50.01 percent of CENG.
