LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ. (April 26, 2008) - Oyster Creek Generating Station operators shut down the unit Friday, April 25, 2008 at midnight EDT to begin a scheduled maintenance outage.

During the shutdown workers will repair a turbine component that will allow the unit to return to 100 percent power. Many other inspections and maintenance activities on a variety of plant component and systems will also be performed.

Many of the activities scheduled during the shutdown cannot be performed while the unit is running, and all activities are designed to ensure the safe and reliable production of electricity through the plant's operating cycle.

The facility delayed powering down for the outage until spring to minimize any impact on aquatic life in the Oyster Creek canal.

“Oyster Creek has worked hard to prepare for this outage,” said Site Vice President Tim Rausch. “We have targeted work to complete, including eliminating the turbine oscillations to ensure reliability this summer when New Jersey needs our electricity the most.”

Oyster Creek, located in Lacey Township, generates clean, safe and reliable power for about 600,000 homes -- the equivalent of all of the homes in Mercer, Burlington and Ocean counties.
